Understanding Class Certificates: A Buyer's Guide
Class status can make or break a deal. Learn what each certificate means and what to look out for when buying a vessel.
What Is Classification?
Classification societies (Lloyd's Register, DNV, Bureau Veritas, ABS, etc.) set and verify technical standards for ship construction and maintenance. A vessel "in class" means it meets these standards and has been regularly inspected.
When a vessel falls out of class — due to missed surveys, outstanding conditions, or structural issues — it becomes very difficult to insure, operate commercially, or sell at market value.
Key Certificates to Check
- Classification Certificate: The main certificate confirming the vessel meets class rules. Check the expiry date and any conditions/recommendations noted.
- Safety Construction Certificate: Confirms the vessel's structural integrity meets SOLAS requirements.
- Safety Equipment Certificate: Verifies all safety equipment (lifeboats, fire systems, EPIRBs) is present and functional.
- International Load Line Certificate: Defines the maximum safe draught for different conditions.
- MARPOL Certificates: IOPP (oil pollution), ISPP (sewage), and IAPP (air pollution) certificates confirming environmental compliance.
Survey Schedule
- Annual Survey: Basic inspection every 12 months. Missing this can lead to suspension of class.
- Intermediate Survey: More thorough inspection at the 2.5-year mark of the 5-year cycle.
- Special Survey: The most comprehensive (and expensive) survey, every 5 years. Typically requires drydocking. Budget $200K–$1M+ depending on vessel size.
Red Flags
- Conditions of class that haven't been addressed
- Overdue surveys or surveys completed late
- Change of class society (sometimes done to avoid strict requirements)
- Withdrawn class status at any point in the vessel's history
How to Verify
Request the full class survey status report directly from the classification society, not just from the seller. Most societies offer online verification tools. On TradeVessels, sellers are encouraged to upload their class certificates — look for listings with documentation available.
